Visitor Guidelines

At Nauru Medical Centre, we welcome family members and caregivers as an important part of a patient’s healing and recovery. To ensure a safe, comfortable, and respectful environment for everyone, we kindly ask visitors to follow the visitor guidelines.

General Visitation Guidance

  • All inpatients are allowed two (2) visitors aged 18 years or older at a time.
  • One visitor under 18 years of age may be permitted where necessary to support family circumstances, subject to staff approval.
  • All visitors and caregivers are expected to follow hospital infection prevention and safety procedures.

Visitors and caregivers must:

  • Be free from symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhoea within the previous 24 hours.
  • Perform hand hygiene (wash or sanitise hands) when entering and leaving patient areas.
  • Follow hospital mask and hygiene policies when required by staff or signage.
  • Respect patient privacy and maintain a quiet, healing environment.
  • Comply with staff instructions and all hospital safety regulations at all times.

Visitors who are unwell or have recently been exposed to infectious illnesses (such as influenza, dengue, measles, or chickenpox) should delay their visit until they are fully recovered or medically cleared.

Department-Specific Visitation Guidlines

Emergency Department

  • One (1) visitor may accompany a patient to the Emergency Department.
  • Visitation may be restricted due to patient acuity, space limitations, or emergency activity.

Inpatient Ward

  • Two (2) visitors at a time are permitted, provided patient care and rest are not disrupted.

Maternity Unit

  • Labour & Delivery: One (1) designated visitor is permitted.
  • Before & After Delivery: Two (2) visitors at a time are permitted

Critical Care Areas (NICU & ACU)

  • Visitation is carefully managed to support patient safety and recovery.
  • One (1) visitor at a time is permitted, subject to staff guidance and patient condition.

Paediatric Ward

  • Both parents or designated caregivers are welcome.
  • A maximum of two (2) visitors at a time is permitted.

Outpatient Services

  • The number of visitors or caregivers accompanying outpatients may be limited by the clinic supervisor to ensure safety, privacy, and adequate space within the clinic.

Siblings / Minors as Visitors

Siblings/minors under 18 years of age may visit, but must be always supervised by an adult.

Siblings / minors are not allowed to visit ACU, NICU & Maternity Ward.

Special Circumstances and Exceptions

Exceptions to these guidelines may be approved on a case-by-case basis by the Nursing Director or Medical Officer in Charge.
