Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will Nauru citizens have to incur costs for health treatments provided?

No. Nauruan citizens do not have to pay for healthcare services. All essential medical care remains free of charge, just as it was under the previous health system.
Healthcare continues to be fully funded by the Government of Nauru to ensure that no one is denied necessary treatment because of cost.

However, our new and innovative elective treatments, including procedures undertaken by personal choice will be offered at subsidised rates. Patients will only be required to pay a partial cost, with the remainder covered by the government.

Is the Overseas Medical Referral (OMR) programme now handled by the Nauru Medical Centre (NMC)?

Yes. The Overseas Medical Referral (OMR) programme is now jointly managed by NMC and the Government of Nauru. A new committee and process have been established to oversee overseas treatment referrals.

This committee is responsible for reviewing medical recommendations, prioritising cases based on clinical need, and ensuring that all referrals are managed fairly, transparently, and in the best interests of patients. The NMC and the Government of Nauru work together to arrange care with accredited overseas hospitals, monitor patient progress, and ensure continuity of care when patients return home.

How long will I be hospitalised for a planned surgery?

For most planned surgeries, patients can expect to stay in hospital for 3–5 days, provided there are no complications. Admission typically occurs one day before the scheduled surgery to allow for pre-operative preparation.

Are visitors allowed in the treatment areas?

Yes. Visitors are allowed at the discretion of the clinical team, based on the patient’s condition and safety considerations, during visiting hours.

What is triage?

Triage is the initial assessment performed by a nurse, which includes a brief medical history and examination. This process helps determine the severity of your condition and prioritises care accordingly.
