Rotational Specialist Programme

The Rotational Specialist Program at Nauru Medical Centre (NMC) supports the delivery of specialist medical and surgical services within the Republic of Nauru’s national health system. The program is designed to improve access to specialist care locally and to reduce the need for overseas medical referrals, while ensuring patients continue to receive coordinated and high-quality care.

Through planned short-term rotations, experienced specialist doctors and surgeons visit NMC to work alongside local clinical teams. The program plays a key role in providing timely specialist input for patients whose care would otherwise require treatment abroad.

Program Overview

Specialist rotations are scheduled throughout the year, typically lasting 7 to 21 days, and are aligned with patient needs and service priorities. Visiting specialists integrate into existing hospital services and contribute to outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and procedural services where available.

General Visitation Guidance

Depending on the specialty and available hospital services, visiting specialists may provide:

Specialist outpatient clinic appointments

Reviews of patients admitted to the hospital

Specialist procedures or surgeries where appropriate

Advice and treatment planning in partnership with local doctors

All care is delivered within NMC’s facilities and follows established hospital policies, clinical governance requirements, and safety standards.

Specialist Areas Supported

The program supports a range of medical and surgical specialties, including:

• Cardiology
• Endocrinology
• Oncology / Haematology
• Nephrology
• Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)
• Gastroenterology
• Dermatology
• Spine Surgery
• Orthopaedics
• General Surgery
• Urology

Additional specialties may be supported in response to service demand and patient needs.

General Visitation Guidance

Patient care is coordinated before, during, and after specialist rotations. Visiting specialists work closely with NMC clinicians to ensure appropriate documentation, handover, and follow-up. Ongoing care is managed by local healthcare teams, with repeat specialist visits arranged when clinically required.
